Reflections

Second album of Maëla Raoult is available on Spotify, Youtube and all digital platforms.

It is a journey around the world that Maëla proposes for this second album honouring composers of the 21st century. Contemporary music is an important part of Maëla’s work. She offers a virtuosic and luminous highlighting of unmissable and essential pieces of clarinet repertoire like the Sequenza by Luciano Berio, the three pieces by Igor Stravinsky and the Sonata by Edison Denisov ; a brilliant and shining interpretation of Sonatimage by François Meimoun and the Fantaisie by Jörg Widmann ; the creation of Tocatina by Sina Fallahzadeh, written especially for Maëla ; without forgetting the two pieces by the belgian composer Michel Lysight : Solipsism and Facing the looking glass.

On Solipsism and Facing the looking glass by Michel Lysight, edited by Alain Van Kerckhoven, New Consonant Music :
Solipsism is a work in three short movements. We listen to the rhythmic language of the composer (short cells, Fibonacci series, evolutionary repetitions…) which explores various modal or polymodal scales while calling to a technical virtuosity for the performer. Abrupt register jumps combined with unexpected dynamic variations give the listener the impression of a dialogue between two or even multiple instruments.
Facing the looking glass (2017) is a serie of three pieces with contrasting tempers. The first is based on a rhythmic ostinato, alternating with other motifs that are gradually built by adding new notes. The second is a long melodic improvisation based on two rhythmical patterns. The third, built in 7/8 measures, is very virtuoso and from repetitive inspiration. In the three pieces, the sudden modulations give subtle and varied color changes. The traditionally big leaps of register give the impression that several clarinets converse with each other.
